Of all the MMORPGs vying for World of Warcraft’s crown, Star Wars: The Old Republic stands a pretty fair chance against Blizzard’s juggernaut. But being a contender doesn’t come cheap, as EA’s chief financial officer Eric Brown explained in today’s meeting with Wedbush Morgan Securities in New York. In fact, Brown called The Old Republic the "largest ever development project, period, in the history of the company."
According to a report on Eurogamer, Brown outlined the average cost of an EA developed game at around $30 million. MMOs, however, cost "significantly more than that," and Brown estimates that World of Warcraft specifically may have required upwards of $100 million. "That’s lifetime [research and development] to actually ship it and obviously then there’s maintenance subsequent to ship and expansion packs," Brown continued.
So, if World of Warcraft took $100 million to get off the ground back in 2004, how much can EA expect to spend on their Star Wars MMO? Brown didn’t throw out any numbers of his own, but even if we assume The Old Republic costs the exact same amount to launch as Blizzard’s game, that’s still forgetting a couple key expenses: any costs associated with the Star Wars license, and, if you really wanted to be picky about it, the $620-million-plus EA spent acquiring developer Bioware and Pandemic back in 2007.

A massively multiplayer game based off popular science fiction television series Battlestar Galactica is due to launch this fall, license holder NBC Universal announced today.
A client-free and browser-based affair said to pack "state of the art graphics," Battlestar Galactica Online is being powered by Unity–the same technology used by EA’s broswer-based Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online.
Development of the game is being handled by independent Norwegian studio Artplant, the previous works of which include Riding Club Championships. Going by its website, Artplant "aims to become one of the lea…

Alex Segura of DC Comics has announced that starting on July 1st, J. Michael Straczynski will be writing the flagship books for two members of the fabled DCU trinity, Superman and Wonder Woman. DC will announce the names of those who will be teaming with JMS on these titles, and the new directions these fabled heroes will be taking over the next few months.
In a statement posted on DC’s The Source blog JMS talked about what the opportunity to write the flagship title for the Man of Steel means to him: “For as long as I’ve been doing conventions (starting in the early Cretaceous period, when it was just me and a handful of pterosaurs on a panel debating whether or not mammals with opposable thumbs were really necessary to the writing of quality comics, a point still hotly debated today), there has always been the same question from folks in the audience: “Is there any one character who is your dream character to write for?” The answer has always been the same: Superman. When I first came over to DC, that dream was realized in part by Dan DiDio’s gracious invitation to write the first of potentially many Superman original graphic novels. Now the dream has come fully true with the opportunity to write for the mainstream title, in a story that returns Superman to his roots in a way that will have the whole country talking about him in ways that we haven’t seen in a long time.”
And he seemed almost as excited to be penning the Wonder Woman title (which Gail Simone is leaving to write Birds of Prey): “Similarly, the chance to write Wonder Woman — the nearest analogue to Superman in the DCU — is massively exciting. She’s a vital, powerful character, and we hope to bring a more contemporary sensibility to her character will retaining everything that makes her unique.”
