Blizzard bans 20,000 Warcraft III CD-keys on Battle.net.

Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft III has for the past few months been the target of many a cheater. In particular map hacks — which allow one to discover the position of an opponent on the map at the start of the game — have been widely used.

Several weeks ago Blizzard uttered severe threats that it would delete the accounts and ban the CD-keys of players that were discovered to be using these hacks. And last Friday the development house indeed closed the accounts of 20,000 players, and their CD-keys were suspended from ladder play for two weeks. Naturally Blizzard is not happy with taking such harsh methods:

“We regret having to employ these extreme measures; however, certain unscrupulous players have impaired the game play of the Warcraft III community as a whole, and severe action continues to be warranted and required.”

Players are encouraged to report any instances of hacking or cheating at hacks@blizzard.com.
