New DVD format delayed as Hollywood takes the stage
The world’s largest electronics makers are working closely with Hollywood’s film studios to nail down the standards for the next DVD, but said on Tuesday it will be delayed until the end of the year.
The Blu-ray group of 13 electronics giants is proposing a new DVD technology that can store up to eight times as much information on a single disk. Hollywood is also being courted by Toshiba and NEC which have another technology.
The studios are unlikely to support two competing technologies because they do not wish to publish DVDs in different formats.
How Hollywood sways is crucial, said Chris Buma, program manager for audiovisual disk recording at Philips Electronics, one of the Blu-Ray members.
