Firefox browser disappoints

Being a reasonably happy user of the Pre-release version of Firefox, I was eagerly looking forward to the arrival of the real thing on 9th November. The big day arrived with lots of media attention and I duly downloaded the first true production release. Now, almost 2 weeks later, I find myself disappointed. The reason for this is so fundamental that I’m surprised lots of other users haven’t complained.

The fact is that Firefox only cuts the mustard as a modern browser because of its extensions (other people call them plug-ins). Perhaps nowhere is this more true than in the area of tabbed browsing and kiosk browsing.

Without these missing extensions (for example one called autohide which facilitates kiosk browsing), Firefox is, in my opinion, a long way behind some of the IE-based browser shells such as Maxthon and Avant. Therefore, in spite of the security risks of using IE-based browsers (I’m a negeclted W2k user so have unfixed IE flaws), I’m seriously considering returning to either Avant or Maxthon.

Though Firefox was released on time, quite a number of the extensions that made it usable weren’t and still haven’t been. I admit to feeling greatly let down by this state of affairs.
