Wrath of the Lich King Releasing on DVD Only

Wrath of the Lich King gameplay.

Installing World of Warcraft entails taking four nicely packaged CDs and putting up with an install time bordering the countries of "absurd" and "offensive." This is, of course, absolute gibberish to anyone who instead purchased the Collector’s Editions of the game and subsequent expansion. In those, the game content comes on both CD and DVD formats.

According to a moderator post on the official WOW forums (via WoW Insider), Wrath of the Lich King, the game’s latest expansion, will only ship in the DVD format. Anyone without a capable computer will have to either upgrade or wait for the content to be released in digital form. And a warning: If you want to play the expansion on launch day, don’t take the latter route. The Burning Crusade wasn’t released digitally until a few weeks after the retail version.

While it seems like most people would have a DVD drive on their computer by now, WOW reaches a pretty vast audience, including a lot of players who don’t use their computer for gaming (or much else) beyond Warcraft. Do you think the switch to the newer format will have any effect on the game’s sales, or is it too late in the life of the CD for this to even matter?
