Marvel Zombies 3 #1 - Review
Starting in the swamps of Central Florida, the local Initiative team is investigating reports of several hostile locals and possibly once super-powered villain. As they near a small cabin, they are attacked by zombified locals who are being led by Zombie Deadpool, the wise-cracking , self-healing, crazy assassin. Most of the team is decimated before the tide turns in the heroes’ favor and Deadpool is liquefied in the fan of an airboat.
To be fair, this story is quite a departure from the previous mini-series, not only by adding the heroes of the Marvel 616 Universe that we are all familiar with, but by changing the tone from one of wanton destruction at the hands of the zombies to one of exploration, discovery, and defense by the heroes. Previous series displayed a fair amount of humor and witty banter, and using Deadpool gives Van Lente the ability to throw in some zingers. Overall though, the story is played more like a straight B-Grade horror movie which may alienate some readers but also segments the story and opens it up to new readers who may not be familiar with the previous installments.
Marvel Zombies 3 #1 is a fun horror title that doesn’t take itself too seriously, while providing a neat zombie-mixed-with-superheroes story. Machine Man adds a nice break from the characters usually in the front of the Marvel Zombies stories and allows the character an opportunity to become better known to mainstream readers.
