The ‘World of Warcraft’ Waiting Game
With more and more video games headed to theaters in the coming years, some gamers have been keeping an eye on World of Warcraft, especially after Blizzard announced last year that the one of the world’s most popular games would be spun into a 2009 movie. Now they’re backing off that statement.

Shacknews reports that Blizzard president Mike Morhaime sang a different tune at BlizzCon 2008, which took place this weekend. It was at the same convention a year ago when the Warcraft movie was first announced.
"I don’t know about the 2009 date, but it is still something we are very excited about," Morhaime said. "We do have a draft of a script, it isn’t final. … I think we still need to do a lot of work."
So, if I’m interpreting his comments, I’ll say 2011. I’d be tempted to go for a summer 2010 release, but given that the script isn’t done, I think a lot more things need to come into place: Who’s directing, what will the cast look like, etc. Certainly, this movie could be put together in a year or so, but there’s no reason to rush a bad product into theaters. Blizzard and Legendary Pictures has a lot riding on this project, and if it’s done correctly, it can be the blueprint for the proper way to adapt a video game into a movie.
In order to accomplish all of that, I just think you need more time, and I think you need the right release date. With 2010 already filling up, gunning for a more open 2011 (at least, after Marvel’s front-loaded May and June of that year) makes a tremendous amount of sense.
