Gears of War 2 Scoring Winning Reviews Around the Net
With Gears of War 2 already having sold over two million units since its release last week, clearly the game had enough hype to send sales skyrocketing. But did the game actually live up to all that excitement? We took a look at reviews from around the web, including our own, to figure it out. Here’s a summary of what others have been saying about Gears of War 2. Let us know your own thoughts in the comments.
1UP: A (full review)
EGM managing editor Greg Ford gave the game his full seal of approval, noting “an excellent campaign, juiced-up multiplayer, addictive new co-op Horde mode, and new enemies, items, and weapons” as major additions from the original Gears of War. More varied level design and more complex (though still relatively light) story progression aid the single-player, multiplayer has improved, and Ford was especially pleased with the new Horde co-op mode, which he called both “a treat” and “a blast.” Despite a couple of “held-over missteps” from the first game, Ford said Gears 2 has an “impressive level of polish across the board.”
Game Informer: 9 (full review)
Game Informer reviewer Adam Biessener wondered if Gears developer Epic “sat down with a huge pile of money and a list of everything that could be improved from the first game, and spent all those dollars addressing that list.” He listed off a ton of impressive upgrades to the sequel, including a more coherent story, better co-op play, and “excellent and creative” new multiplayer modes. Although he conceded that “the title?s relentless immaturity can grate after a while,” Biessener also admitted, “There isn’t a game out there that can compete with Gears on its home turf.”
