Developer Cryptic Studios hit the whole make-your-own-superhero idea out of the park when they created City of Heroes for NCsoft — so much so that they ended up getting sued by Marvel for providing gamers with the tools to create in-game replicas of copyrighted comic book characters. Still, there was one superhero in particular that — because of the lack of a web-swinging power in City of Heroes — players could never quite duplicate: Spider-Man.
Now that Cryptic is off making Champions Online for Atari, it would appear that fans of the ole webhead will have a lot more luck with Cryptic’s second superhero MMO. The latest trailer for Champions focuses on the new swinging travel power, so aspiring Spider-men have should have something to look forward to.
It seems Cryptic’s also learned that getting sued isn’t a great way to spend time or money, because this new ability looks less like Peter Parker’s typical mode of transportation and more like a simple grappling gun. At the end of the day, it’ll probably still be a pretty exhilarating way to get around, even if your Spidey clone isn’t technically shooting strands of webbing from his wrists.
