Stargate Worlds: Money Issues Not Hindering Production

According to Gamasutra, a website has popped up claiming that Cheyenne Mountain, currently developing the much-anticipated Stargate Worlds, has not paid its employees in 22 days.

Cheyenne Mountain’s Kevin Balentine has gone on record as saying that there are indeed cash flow issues but that they are not hindering Stargate’s development:

As of press time, it’s been 21 days since staffers at Stargate Worlds creator Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment should have been paid. At least, that’s what a rather stark, declarative insider website devoted solely to this claim.

Cheyenne Mountain actually seemed to be having a strong year; in March, the company’s Joel Ybarra told Gamasutra that it has four teams at work on both the Stargate MMO and a second, unspecified online title.

And in April, the company formed its own publisher, FireSky, to handle Stargate Worlds and Cheyenne’s other unannounced online titles.

But the company’s Kevin Balentine, when approached about the “Days Since Cheyenne Mountain Employees Have Been Paid” website, told Gamasutra that the company is indeed facing cash flow challenges as a start-up in the economic downturn.

“At Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, we have always been upfront with the media and our fans that we are a start-up,” said Balentine. “Like many start ups, we face the same cash-flow issues that all pre-revenue companies face.”

Balentine says the company’s core investors are still dedicated to the company — “but the new economic realities are forcing us to seek out additional sources of funding, and that’s what we’re doing.”

Meanwhile, though, Balentine claims that Stargate Worlds is still moving forward. “We recently completed a successful phase of closed beta testing and we will start a second phase early in 2009,” he notes, calling the community thus far “fantastic.”

Animallball D&D Monster Tourney

What’s the best D&D monster? Is it the powerful beholder that makes players quake with fear? Or is it the clever goblin that proves so versatile in every campaign? There’s no definition for what’s “best”– that’s something only you can answer.

Here’s the rules:

1) We’ll post up monsters. Make them from a D&D sourcebook- not some weird shit you saw in Dragon once- and you can only post one monster per post. You are not allowed to post again until 2 other people have posted. Once we get to 64 monster races, we’ll close the pool.

2) Then we’ll randomize the order of the monsters and place them into 16 groups of four races. A poll will be held in each group (we’ll do one a day and the polls for each group will stay open for 48 hours) and only the top vote-getter will move on to the tournament.

3) Then we’ll randomize again and pit each monster race against each other in a standard single elimination, 16-team bracket. The top vote-getter moves on and the loser goes home crying. Ties will be determined by a coin toss.

Polls will remain open for 48 hours and will close automatically when the time expires. People that don’t follow the posting rules will have their posts deleted. People who vote using puppet accounts will have their votes not counted (from any account).

If you want to comment or espouse the greatness of your favorite monster- feel free to do it in the post when the polls open.

There can be only one.

The tourney has already started and you can currently vote in the first three Qualifying Groups! But the polls for Group 1 close this evening, so vote quickly:
